RV Park / RV Campground – Bay Breeze on the Bay RV Park

We had a rare few days in between a couple of RV trips so we decided to squeeze in a stay that involved salt water, palm trees, sunshine and warm breezes. Google searches around Ft. Myers and Cape Coral, Florida had me combing through RV parks looking for the perfect getaway. I found some large, sprawling resort style RV parks that offered every amenity imaginable, but I was seeking something more on the quaint and quiet side. That’s when I landed on Sugar Sand Beach RV Resort on the tiny, historic island of Matlacha (pronounced MAT-lah-shay). The pictures of the views on their website had me sold and I quickly called to book our stay.
Sugar Sand Beach RV Resort offers just 10 RV sites. Yes, you heard that right, just 10. It’s nestled on a small piece of land opening onto the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve and surrounded by tall, swaying palm trees. Toss out of your mind the typical campground and you will find an incredibly unique RV experience. When calling to make your reservation, payment in-full is required, and it’s non-refundable. Pulling into the park, you are met with a crushed sea-shell surface (wonderful for keeping the sand out of your rig) and one, small, tropical colored building on site. The building is the common room for the park and houses a bathroom, kitchen, table and chairs, couches, TV and an unmanned desk. It truly is the quintessential, well-loved beach “shack” overlooking the patio, outdoor bar and stunning views of the bay. Getting to your site is quite simple – you get to take your pick of an open site. There are no assigned sites and a whiteboard posted on the wall in the small building holds the handwriting of other guests and the spots they have claimed for their trip. Walking outside we quickly realized that the gods of RV parks and camping were smiling down on us; the prime spot in the park was open. Located on the left-hand side of the building, we pulled our Class A in nose first, stopping just feet from the break wall dividing us from the bay, our large windshield giving us a stunning, tropical water view. We quickly set up camp, pulled chairs out, grabbed some adult beverages and just relaxed. We took in those incredible views, listening to the breeze gently blowing through the surrounding palm trees.
Sugar Sand is one of those truly rare, hidden gems of an RV park. This is not a place you come to visit if you are looking for amenities galore; this is a place you come to for getting away from it all. There is no pool, no spa, no playground, no room for golf carts or the extra “toys” we sometimes like to lug with us. This is where you come and feel as if this small piece of land is yours and you are sharing it with a few close friends. The patio out back of the beach shack hosts tables, chairs, lounge chairs, a bar (not stocked but a great gathering place) and a grill. Steps away is a dock with a deck perfect for sitting, sipping on a drink and watching the sunset. In the few days we got to spend at Sugar Sand, I could feel the stress melt away and our pace slowing down to island time.
The owner, Van, has done an incredible job creating a slice of tropical paradise for RVers to enjoy, without all the hype of a lot of other RV parks. Adding Sugar Sands to my list of absolute favorites, hidden gem RV parks was easy. This is a place you will want to come to get away from it all and quite possibly, never want to leave.
