On your two-hour tour, you’ll learn about Maine lobsters and how they’re caught. Departing from the heart of Bar Harbor’s waterfront, this boat tour is a must-do on your list of activities while visiting.
8. Jordan Pond Ice Cream & Fudge Shop – While looking for the perfect souvenir, stop into Jordan Pond Ice Cream & Fudge Shop. You won’t be disappointed by these tasty treats. Situated within walking distance of almost everything, the ice cream shop makes the perfect afternoon snack between adventures. Try the blueberry ice cream; it’s their most popular flavor.
7. Shopping in Bar Harbor – After enjoying lunch or dinner out on the town, stop in some of the many quaint and cozy downtown shops. Whether you’re looking for clothing or souvenirs, you’re sure to find the perfect thing to commemorate your time in the cozy town of Bar Harbor.
6. Kayaking in Acadia – For those who love a good paddle, Acadia National Park offers a great spot to kayak. Jordan Pond is one of the park’s most iconic lakes. Surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, the lake is accessible by road and offers a well-manicured trail around its banks. While swimming is prohibited, you can enjoy kayaking and canoeing at Jordan Pond with a personal watercraft. There’s always something special about being in the water and looking up to take in the grandeur of the mountains and scenery.
5. Hiking in Acadia – The national park offers several beautiful chances to explore and enjoy the outdoors. If you’re more adventurous, take advantage of the Beehive Trail. Known for its areas of ladders and rungs, this trail is not for those scared of heights. However, if you can overcome your fear, the views from the top are breathtaking. Another great and easy hike is the Bubble Trail. Coming in under two miles roundtrip, this hike lets you get up close and personal with Bubble Rock, a precarious and fascinating rock structure.
4. Thunder Hole – While in Acadia, take Loop Road around to Thunder Hole. This carved-out inlet along the rocky shoreline emphasizes the enormous power of the ocean tides. As the turning tides force the water into the narrow spaces, air escapes and causes a thunder-like sound to erupt. Depending on what time of day you visit, you might even get in the splash zone.
3. Cadillac Mountain – Sitting proudly as the highest point on the eastern seaboard, Cadillac Mountain is a part of Acadia National Park. As a popular destination for those visiting the park, Cadillac Mountain is easily accessible by car and ensures spectacular views. One of the most memorable things at Cadillac Mountain is catching the sunrise. Because of the location, you’ll be among the first Americans to welcome the day. Take an extra blanket to wrap up in as you soak in the cool morning breezes. (Note: Vehicle reservations are required to access Cadillac Mountain from late May through October.)
2. Tide Pools and Walk to Bar Island – Exposed only at low tide, the land bridge over to Bar Island is a must-do activity. Accessible as much as two hours before low tide and two hours after, visitors can find tidal pools filled with many different types of marine life. Kids and adults will be fascinated by the unique experience of getting this glimpse under the water. And if you’re up for a little more adventure, take the short hike around the uninhabited Bar Island before returning. Pay attention to the tides; you want to avoid getting stranded.
1. Local Food Scene – No visit to Maine is complete without sinking your teeth into a lobster roll and some fresh seafood. The downtown area lacks nothing in the way of charm and choice. From a “chowda” to a blueberry cobbler, you’ll find tastes of Maine wherever you go.
